23 September 2004

The former Department of Finance and Economic Affairs in Mpumalanga, has scooped an award from the South African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA).

The Department won the category for Departments in the Mpumalanga Province for excellence in Annual Financial Reporting. The SAIGA Reporting Awards, introduced three years ago, are aimed at recognising the pursuit of excellence in Annual Reports published by all Provincial and National Government Departments.

The win moves the Department from a national position of number 111 last year to position 14 at 89,25 %.

To ensure total independence from the executive and the finance departments, the award is managed and administered by SAIGA with the support and co-operation of the Accountant-General as well as the Auditor-General.

Both MECs of the Departments of Finance and Economic Development and Planning, Mrs Mmathulare Coleman and Mr Jacob Mabena respectively, have welcomed the bestowal of the award, saying this symbolises total commitment to transparent, effective and accountable financial reporting on how public funds are used.
