Mpumalanga department of Finance attracts learners to choose Risk Management as a career path

19 February 2009

The Department of Finance will embark on a series of Road shows aimed at attracting learners to follow Risk Management as a career path.

The Risk Management Road shows under the theme “Building Sustainable Governance for Mpumalanga” are targeting learners in Grade 10-12 studying commercial subjects. Risk Management in the public sector is a requirement in terms of the Public Finance Act of 1999.

However there is an acute shortage of Risk Management professionals within the country and this is also aggravated by the fact that only three tertiary institutions are offering a degree in Risk Management. This shortage also equally affects the Province’s ability to attract and retain the few skilled risk management professionals.

This therefore leads to multiple challenges such as ineffective risk management practices and generally poor internal controls that compromise standards and results in poor service delivery. It is our objective as a Department, to promote risk management as a career of choice within the Province in order to deal with acute shortage of risk management professionals.
