Wednesday, 27 March 2013
Mpumalanga MEC for Finance, Mr Madala Masuku attended the inaugural sitting of Mpumalanga Provincial Information Officers Forum in Nelspruit, Mbombela
Municipality on Wednesday, 27 March 2013.
The Forum is one of the initiatives of the Human Rights Commission of promoting transparency and compliance with the Promotion of Access to Information
Act (PAIA) throughout the country.
Addressing delegates that included Civil societyector, Communicators and Deputy Chief Information Officers of the Provincial Departments and public entities,
MEC Masuku cautioned that there is greater danger to withholding information from the society than it is when government services are accessible.
“The right to information is a Constitutional Right which we must all promote and protect, whether in government, private sector or community structures.
The Province is committed to working together with the Human Rights Commission to advance this Constitutional imperative of enabling access to information
held by the state,” said MEC Masuku.
He said the principles of transparency, accountability and participation are critical anchors of a development-oriented Democratic State such as South Africa.
“Freedom that we have will lose its meaning in the absence of adherence to the principles of transparency and accountability,” MEC Masuku told the delegates at the Forum.
He said Chief Information Officers and all line managers must enable access to information to advance democratic requirement for effective, efficient and
accessible government to the people.
MEC Masuku said Government is committed to supporting the efforts of the Human Rights Commission to ensure compliance with PAIA by all departments, municipalities
and public entities in the Province.
Mpumalanga Provincial Information Officers’ Forum is an important structure that will assist in improving access to information and promoting active citizenry.
