Mpumalanga Finance MEC receives SAIGA excellence awards

12 November 2010

Mpumalanga MEC for Finance, Yvonne (Pinky) Phosa today, Friday, 12 November 2010, accepted two exceptional awards that recognise excellence and good reporting practices in the public sector.

The Annual Public Sector Reporting Awards are seen as a contribution to assist Treasury and public sector departments to meet the objectives of the Public Finance Management Act and related regulations.

The awards are also aimed to advance accountability and transparency in the public sector.

The Mpumalanga Department of Finance scooped two awards for the ‘Best Annual Report of a Department in Mpumalanga’ and also being the ‘Overall winner for the 2010 Annual Public Sector Reporting Award’.

MEC Phosa said these Awards will instil confidence in our government and sends a clear message to our people that we remain committed to do more to improve their living conditions and make the province a better place to live and invest in.

“We should know that our yardstick for success can therefore only be whether we improve the quality of life of those most severely affected by the policies of the past and the economic meltdown.

“The annual reports should provide an indication of our commitment to change the lives of our people, and create a better life for all, MEC Phosa said. MEC said the awards will serve as a motivation and inspire the officials to do more, better and rightly fulfilled because it has been proven today that together we can achieve great things.

Meanwhile, the Executive President of South African Institute of Government Auditors, and the Chairperson of the Awards Committee, Professor Dieter Gloeck congratulated all the winners, including Mpumalanga Department of Finance for taking the overall award for the year.

“Consistent score of above 90 percent are evidence that government departments apply the highest reporting standards – often confused with and overshadowed by media report of mismanagement of funds and corruption,” said Prof Gloeck.

He added that while the occurrence of corruption and mismanagement is by no means condoned, publicity should also be given to achievements which relate to good accountability.

The Department has maintain its reputation of receiving awards as it did during 2004/05 financial year when it was announced as a worthy recipient of the Annual Public Service Reporting Award in the category of all provincial government Departments in Mpumalanga.

The award adds to a growing list of accolades for the department that has recently received a clean audit opinion for the financial year of 2009/10.
