MEC Phosa, donors put roof over the heads of two child-headed families

19 July 2011

The Dlangamandla and Nkonyane children may be orphans, but they will always have roofs over their heads.

This follows a presentation of fully furnished houses to both families in Daggakraal and Wakkerstroom respectively by Pinky Phosa, Finance MEC in Mpumalanga, as part of the Nelson Mandela International Day commemoration on Monday, 18 July 2011.

“The celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day gives us a reason to reflect on our contribution to the project of building a free, united and democratic society. As the beneficiaries of selfless sacrifices made by our fore bearers, including former President, Dr Nelson Mandela, we must continue their project of better life for all”, said MEC Phosa.

Together with officials from her departmental and that of Pixley Ka Isaka Seme local municipality, the MEC delivered furniture, household items and clothes to the two child headed families.

The department identified the two families last year and since then efforts were made to contribute to improving their living conditions.

More than R100 thousand worth of goods were donated by local business, generous donors and staff of the Department of Finance.

According to MEC Pinky Phosa the celebration of Nelson Mandela Day underscores the view that the goal of a better life for all will be made all possible when all in society embrace the values of compassion, humanity and moral integrity and tolerance.

“God said, you can only touch His heart by caring for the poor and the marginalised, particularly the widows and the orphans”, she said in conclusion.
